The Best Wood Planers for Your Woodworking Needs

A wood planer is a highly useful tool when it comes to all things wood. Wood is one of those materials that have a natural element that may take a certain level of craftsmanship to bring out this beauty. Not only does a wood planer bring out the grain and pattern of the material, but makes the wood functional for all types of projects. While it may not seem like a necessary tool, a wood planer is actually one of the most critical tools when making furniture or other carpentry projects.

A wood planer is used to even out the wood into a useable board with even thickness all around. Planers are equipped with rotating blades that slice off tiny layers of the workpiece. Most thickness planers allow you to adjust the machine to your desired height. A wood planer evens out wooden workpieces that allow you to easily create expertly crafted projects, joinery, and level items. With such a critical piece of equipment, you want to be sure you are getting a quality piece that will last you through all your projects. There are a number of different planers on the market, making it hard to distinguish between all your options. Here we shave down to the nitty-gritty to help you choose the best wood planers for you.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Benchtop Planers

A benchtop wood planer is not a small investment and it only is made to complete one task. This means it is ever so important that you choose one that suits your needs. Planers serve one important purpose, so you want to ensure that the machine does it properly. With all the options on the market, there may be certain features that you treasure more. If you are unsure what to look for, we go through some key aspects of wood planers you should consider before making your pick.

Motor

The motor, like with most other power tools, is the heart of the machine. Since planers work with rough material and exercise extreme precision, you want to look for a powerful motor to help you get the job done. You can determine this by the projects and type of work that you plan to do. A good rule of thumb is to always consider the type of materials you are working with. For harder woods, such as oak, walnut, maple, which are great for joinery, cabinetry, or sturdy arts and crafts projects you may need a more powerful motor. For this type of project, you may need a stronger motor. We suggest a 2-horsepower motor to help your machine shave down the material more easily. If you plan to work with softer woods such as cedar, fir, or pine, you will only need anywhere from a 1-1 ½ horsepower motor to get the job done. We also suggest a benchtop planer with at least a 15-amp motor since the tool tends to draw a large amount of power. This type of motor is ideal for cutting wood and can handle the material easily without putting too much strain on the machine or the user.

Blade

The blade is also an important consideration when choosing your planer since that is essentially what shaves down your workpieces. There are two main planer blades or knives that accompany benchtop planers. These are known as straight blades and spiral blades, which both come with their pros and cons.

  1. The first type is known as straight knives, which resemble a peeler or safety razor. The straight blade is bolted on the spinning barrel on the inside of the planer. It aims to quickly slice off thin layers as the material passes through. While a straight knife cuts quickly, the cut can be a bit rough and choppy, since the blade comes in contact with the board directly. Since the blades spin quickly, the friction often builds up and causes rippling or choppiness. While these can be eliminated from sanding the surface after passing through the planer, some prefer a different blade. This option is usually more affordable and can be a great option for those that do not require a smooth surface.
  2. The second type of blade is known as spiral or helical knives. Unlike the straight blade, the spiral blades consist of a number of smaller blades that are angled in different positions bolted on the cutter head. These angled blades often provide a more consistent cut as there is less surface area that meets the blade creating less drag and friction. There are many advantages of this blade such as the ability to reverse and the separation of the blades. This option is often more expensive than the straight knife version.

Cutting Depth

The cutting depth of the wood planer refers to the amount of material that the blade removes with one pass of the working material. Usually, the more powerful planers are able to remove more material creating a larger depth of cut. This is due to the fact that the blades are able to spin faster and remove more material. If you are looking for speed rather than depth of cut, thickness planers that have a cutting depth of ⅛ of an inch per pass are the most efficient. We recommend passing the cutting material through a saw to thin it out as much as you can beforehand. A planer is mostly used for leveling instead of cutting material, so the depth of cut is usually more about speed and efficiency rather than cutting deeper. While max depth is important, there are other features that may be more important.

Allowance

The allowance of your benchtop planer refers to the overall capabilities of the machine. This usually means the width capacity of the working material the planer can handle. Most thickness planers are labeled between 12 and 13 inches, which usually means that the planer is able to work with boards between 12-13 inches in length. The side is limited by the width of the machine Not only is the length important to note, but the input width capacity is also important to consider. For those that do not have an additional saw to cut down on the wood beforehand, the planer’s allowance is important to note. Depending on the types of materials you want to work with, you can determine what capabilities you want your planer to need. Some thickness planers are able to handle super-thin materials as thin as ¼ inches thick, whereas others are equipped to handle working material up to 5 to 6 inches thick.

Snipe

The snipe of your planer is the line that may appear on the front side or backside of the board where the planer made a deeper groove than other areas on the board. The snipe is usually a result of the machine using the small groove as leverage. Sometimes the snipe is faint, but other times it is noticeable, which can affect the look you are going for. Even though most planers come with a carriage lock, the blades still need some leverage. The snipes usually occur towards the beginning or end of the material as there may only be one roller holding the piece in place. If the snipe is an important factor, make sure to find a machine with a carriage lock that eliminates the snipe as much as possible.

Gauge and Depth Stop

These are usually added features of a benchtop thickness planer that can make leveling much more convenient. Getting an exact intended thickness can get a bit tedious because often times it takes more than one pass. Often times you will need to make adjustments to the cutter head and measure after each pass. This is an extremely time-consuming process, but there are a number of tools to make this more efficient. A common feature is a depth stop or built-in gauge column carriage lock that helps to measure the material right from the planer’s deck. This helps to eliminate the extra step of personally measuring the workpiece with a tape measure or combination square. The depth stop also helps to lock in the intended measurement which automatically lowers the cutter head until it reaches the intended thickness.

Dust Collection

While this may not seem like an important function, since planers are mainly designed for functionality, it is actually quite important. Benchtop thickness planers produce a great deal of dust. The high-speed blades shave the wood quickly and spit out the micro-pieces of wood at a high speed, creating a bit of a mess after a few passes. A great feature of some benchtop planers is the attached dust collection ports that easily connect to a vacuum or collection system that makes for easy cleanup. Not only do the dust ports keep the work area safe and clean, but the dust collector also helps to keep dust from settling in the cutter head of the benchtop thickness planers. The addition of an assisted dust port removes and ensures that the cutter head can maintain its speed and function properly for a long time.

Speed

There are different speed types when referring to a wood planer. All are important aspects as it can affect the functionality of the machine. These three main speeds include the cutting speed, feed speed, and cutter head speed.

  1. The cutting speed is the speed at which the blades hit the surface of the workpiece every minute. This speed can affect the number of cuts the blade makes, affecting the efficiency of the machine.
  2. The feed speed is the speed at which the board is able to pass through the planer. On some planers, this speed is adjustable, depending on your preference. Typically, a higher speed produces a rougher finish since the blades strike the material less. A slower speed allows the blades to rotate more, creating a smoother finish.
  3. The cutter head speed is the speed at which the motor spins the blades on the cutter head. We recommend a speed above 8,000 RPMs for a consistent finish.

FAQs About Your New Wood Planer

Are wood planers worth it?

For those that have many woodworking projects that require level workpieces, wood planers are definitely worth it. Since planers are a bit of a one-trick pony, you want to make sure you get the maximum use out of your machine.

How do I choose a thickness planer?

To choose a thickness planer, you need to first determine what type of projects you want to complete. Then you will be able to determine certain features that you want your machine to have. Some will want a portable option, while others may need a sturdier benchtop model with longer infeed and outfeed tables.
